Portrait and fashion photographer Lindsay Adler shows an easy (and cheap) way to light portraits using the light from a window and a few things lying around.
Shoot low, move your model to a sitting position, and shoot when the sun from the window is above the subject. Use black cloth (or whatever) next to the model to block some of the light coming in and further direct it. There is a great video showing her doing this and the beautiful results.
