Abstract:The article discusses the history and social aspects of photography of urban public spaces. Topics include photographs of city streets, the development of amateur urban photography, and the use of photography in law enforcement, including the use of surveillance cameras. Also mention are the work of New York City municipal photographer Eugene de Salignac, photography of historical events, and photographs of human beings walking on streets. The use of photography and videography in counter-surveillance activity is noted.
